15.49 lakh students in government schools will get free uniforms

  • A total of 15.49, 192 public school students will receive free uniforms.
  • A grant of Rs 92.95 crore issued by the Department of Education.
  • The SMCs asked to acquire uniforms at Rs 600 per student.

On Thursday, Punjab Education Minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer announced that the state education department will distribute free uniforms to 15,49,192 public school students from class 1 to class 8 during the 2022-23 academic session. In an official statement, he further said that a grant of Rs 92.95 crore has been released by the Department of Education for this purpose.


The state Education Minister further informed that out of the total beneficiary students, Rs 50.72 crore was sanctioned for 8,45,429 girls, Rs 32.75 crore was sanctioned for 5,45,993 boys from the scheduled caste category, while Rs 9.46 crore was sanctioned for 1, 57,770 boys from the BPL category (below the poverty line).


School Management Committees (SMC) will distribute the free uniforms.

The SMCs were also led by the Punjab Minister of Education at a cost of Rs 600 per student while ordering officials not to purchase uniforms from any particular shop.


Earlier, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann held a meeting with principals of public schools and asked for their views on raising the bar in school education.

Additionally, it has launched an online portal to get ideas and suggestions from teachers and deliver “out-of-the-box” reforms in education.

He further urged teachers to submit their ideas online through the portal to help change the conventional education system and make it paperless, digital, etc., according to an official statement.
