A 12-year-old student from class 5 died on Saturday after being caned by his school teacher for failing a test at Badalpur police station area in Noida. However, police said the exact cause of death was still unknown as he was believed to have been ill that day.
Police said on Sunday Badalpur Police Station received a complaint from the child’s mother that he was assaulted by his teacher on Friday and died while undergoing treatment at a Delhi hospital late on Saturday evening.
Police, meanwhile, have filed a complaint against the 42-year-old teacher, identified by first name as Shobharan, who is on the run, under Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Penal Code Indian. The police formed four teams to catch him.
“Shobharan had the students take a test on October 7, which some failed. He beat these students on their hands. However, the boy appeared to have wounds on more than his hands. He was taken to Dadri hospital for treatment. From there he was referred to Lok Nayak Hospital in Delhi for treatment, where he died on Saturday. We were told that the child was already sick and we are investigating the symptoms he had on the day of the incident,” Ram Badan Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central Noida) said.
Police said the child was studying at a private school in the village of Mahawar, and added that Shobharan visited him in hospital and was with the family during treatment.
“The child’s family as well as Shobharan belong to the same village of Bambawar in Noida. He was with the family when the child was taken to Dadri and then to Lok Nayak Hospital until Saturday evening. However, he fled after the child’s death. He didn’t come home either. We are looking for him,” the DCP said.
He added that the boy’s autopsy had been carried out at Lok Nayak Hospital in Delhi, but the reports had not yet been made available to the police. Singh said the cause of death is unknown so far.
