Classmates remember Acadiana teacher and school board member who died hours before graduation ceremonies at ULM


PARISH IBERIA, Louisiana (KLFY) An Acadiana teacher and school board member who was due to earn a master’s degree in pedagogical leadership died hours before her scheduled ceremonies.

Kristi Hebert, a teacher at Jefferson Island Road Elementary School in New Iberia and a member of the Vermilion Parish School Board, died in a car crash Friday night on the freeway. 14 in the parish of Iberia.

She recently completed her masters online and was due to graduate on Saturday at the graduation ceremony at the University of Louisiana at Monroe.

Graduate Abbie Cates said upon hearing the news of Hebert’s death, her heart sank.

“She was a great person, an inspiration to all of us. She worked hard. My thoughts are with his family and friends. ”

As the ULM class of 2021 filled their seats to the tune of “Pomp and Circumstance,” Hebert’s classmates honored his memory by placing six peach roses on his chair during the graduation ceremony.

“I went out first and carried the roses in front of me,” Cates said.

“Through this symbolism, she led us to our seats and I placed the roses on the chair she would have sat on and they remained there throughout the ceremony. Kristy will forever be part of the Warhawk family.

Administrators at Jefferson Island Road Elementary have announced that bereavement counselors will be on campus to assist students and staff.
