Florida Department of Education steps up fight against school district mask warrants

Florida Department of Education is stepping up fight against mask warrants from local school districts.

Eleven districts across the state currently require students to wear face masks as a measure to slow the spread of COVID-19, but the state’s Education Department says these warrants violate an emergency rule of the new Florida general surgeon.

News4Jax reported last month that the federal government has awarded Project Safe grant program funds to districts that have imposed warrants and which in turn have been financially punished by the DeSantis administration.

Now, the state is prepared not only to withhold the amount of money that school board members in that district would be paid, but also to withhold the amount of all federal grants made to that district.

A spokesperson for the US Department of Education issued a statement to News4Jax, saying, in part: “It remains deeply troubling to see state leaders putting politics ahead of the health and safety of our students, and these leaders should support educators to do the right thing – not punish them.

The state’s Board of Education is expected to discuss withholding state funds on the mask warrants of those 11 school districts on Thursday.

This meeting starts at 1 p.m.
