The state Department of Education has suspended a teacher’s certificate from a Horry County schools after being charged with fatal drunk driving last week.
Michael Oerther, a math teacher at Ocean Bay Middle School, has been arrested and charged after an alleged drunk driving accident that left a woman dead in Carolina Forest on October 25. He has a history of impaired driving, according to documents from the South. Carolina Law Enforcement Division.
The SC Education Department suspended Oerther’s educator’s certificate after concluding that there was “reason to believe that … Mr. Oerther could pose a threat to health, safety and welfare. be students, ”the ministry documents indicate. The certificate is suspended until a due process hearing or until the situation is resolved, the documents say.
Oerther has been placed on administrative leave from schools in Horry County, spokeswoman Lisa Bourcier told The Sun News last week.
Police were charged with impaired driving resulting in death after an accident around 9:30 a.m. last Monday. Oerther was driving a Jeep on Carolina Forest Boulevard when he collided with a Honda stopped at a traffic light, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol. A Honda passenger died in the collision, officials said.
Oerther was taken to hospital and treated for injuries before being arrested.
