Norwalk college teacher receives $25,000 national award – Whittier Daily News

Angelica Gunderson, a teacher at Los Alisos STEM Magnet Middle School in Norwalk, was surprised Tuesday, May 10 with a $25,000 Milken Educator National Prize.

Gunderson is Los Alisos’ lead teacher for Project Lead the Way, a three-year science program that covers coding, robotics, green architecture and more – in and out of the classroom.

“STEM jobs are in high demand, and the excellence Angelica Gunderson demonstrates in preparing students to compete in a global economy is representative of the important work done every day at Los Alisos Middle School,” said Greg Gallagher, Principal principal of the Milken Educator Awards program. , who presented the award with California State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond, in a statement from Milken.

“Angelica gives her students the skills and knowledge to succeed, and the confidence and determination to achieve their dreams,” said Gallagher.

Gunderson is the only educator in California and among more than 60 nationally who will receive the award during the 2021-22 season. She is the first recipient of the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District.

Los Alisos has been recognized by the California League of Schools as a “School to Watch” for 2020.

Gunderson also leads the school’s Femineer and Snap the Gap programs, both of which focus on closing the gender gap in STEM careers. Everything Gunderson does at Los Alisos has a direct impact on the current and future student academy, the statement said.

The cash prize of $25,000 is unlimited. The recipients used the money in various ways. For example, some have spent the funds on their children’s further education or their own education, funding dream excursions, creating scholarships and even adopting children, according to the statement.
